What this episode covers
Let’s talk real numbers — because guessing is how families end up in crisis.
In Maryland, professional home care generally runs in the range of thirty to forty dollars an hour, depending on the county, the schedule, and the level of care. So a caregiver four hours a day, five days a week, lands somewhere around two and a half to three thousand dollars a month. Around-the-clock care at home costs substantially more — and that’s the point where families start comparing home care to residential assisted living, where one monthly rate covers housing, meals, and twenty-four-seven staffing. There’s no universal right answer: it depends on care needs, the home itself, family support, and finances.
When you know the numbers early, you can plan — compare options, check benefits, hold a family meeting. When you first hear them in a discharge meeting, all you can do is react.
