What this episode covers

If your parent served — or was married to someone who did — there may be money for care that nobody ever told your family about.

Aid and Attendance is a VA pension benefit that adds monthly, tax-free income to help wartime veterans and their surviving spouses pay for care — including home care and assisted living. For a surviving spouse it can exceed a thousand dollars a month; for a veteran or a couple, considerably more. Eligibility involves wartime-era service, a need for help with daily activities, and financial limits — and the application process takes patience and paperwork. Accredited veterans service officers will help your family apply for free. Be cautious of anyone who charges a fee to ‘qualify’ you — that’s a red flag.

This is one of the most underused benefits in America, purely because families don’t know it exists. If there’s a veteran anywhere in your family story, ask the question.
