What this episode covers

You’re not tired. You’re depleted — and there’s a difference.

Caregiver burnout is prolonged stress without adequate support. It looks like exhaustion that sleep doesn’t fix, irritability or resentment you feel guilty about, anxiety, poor sleep, getting sick more often, feeling trapped and alone. It builds because the role expands quietly — a few errands becomes medication management becomes being on call every night. And the beliefs that make it worse sound noble: ‘I promised.’ ‘No one will care for her like I do.’ ‘Asking for help means I failed.’ None of them are true. And burnout doesn’t only harm you — over time, it compromises the very care your loved one receives.

Respite care, family cost-sharing, even a few professional hours a week — support exists. Accepting it earlier, not later, is what responsible caregiving actually looks like.
