What this episode covers

‘Dad, we need to talk about your future.’ Stop — that sentence loses before it starts.

Lead with independence, not decline: ‘I want you home, in charge of your own life, for as long as possible — here’s what makes that work.’ Start small — help with housekeeping or a ride to appointments is easier to accept than ‘a caregiver.’ Ask instead of announcing: ‘What would you want if the stairs got harder?’ Choose a calm afternoon, never a hospital hallway. Involve them in every decision — interviewing the caregiver, setting the schedule, keeping their routines. And use allies: many parents can hear from their doctor, their pastor, or an old friend the very thing they cannot hear from their own child.

The goal of the first conversation is not agreement — it’s keeping the door open for the second one. Dignity isn’t just kindness here. It’s the strategy.
