What this episode covers

One campus. Every level of care. One very big contract.

A continuing care retirement community — a CCRC, sometimes called a life plan community — offers independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing all on one campus. Residents move in while they’re still independent, then move through levels of care as needs change — without leaving the community, and without leaving a spouse behind. The tradeoff is cost and contracts. Many CCRCs charge a substantial entrance fee — often six figures — plus monthly fees. And contract types differ enormously in what future care is included, what the monthly fee will become, and whether any of the entrance fee is refundable to your estate.

A CCRC can be excellent planning done a decade early — but that contract deserves an elder-law attorney’s review before anyone signs. It’s one of the largest financial decisions a senior will ever make.
