What this episode covers
The doctor said two words — hospice and palliative — and the family heard the same thing. They are not the same thing.
Palliative care is comfort and symptom relief at any stage of serious illness, delivered alongside curative treatment — chemotherapy, dialysis, surgery all stay on the table. Hospice is comfort-focused care when the goal shifts away from curing — generally when life expectancy is measured in months. The practical way to choose: if your loved one is still fighting the disease but suffering through it, ask for palliative care now. If treatments have stopped working, are causing more suffering than benefit, or your loved one says ‘no more hospitals’ — that’s the hospice conversation. And neither is a one-way door: people improve and graduate from hospice, and families can revoke it to pursue new treatment.
Families lose precious weeks to the fear of one word. Asking earlier — about either — almost always means less pain and more good days.
