What this episode covers

Same building. Three completely different stays — and three completely different bills.

A skilled nursing facility can serve three purposes, and families mix them up constantly. First, short-term rehab: recovering after a hospital stay with daily therapy — Medicare can cover up to one hundred days when you qualify, though full coverage typically ends after day twenty. Second, skilled nursing: ongoing medical needs like wound care or IV therapy. Third, long-term care: permanent residence for someone who needs around-the-clock nursing — and Medicare does not cover that. Families pay privately or through Medicaid. The confusion comes because all three happen under one roof, and the switch from covered rehab to private-pay long-term care can arrive with startling speed.

When the facility says ‘the Medicare days are ending,’ unprepared families panic. Understand the three lanes now, and that meeting becomes a decision — not an ambush.
