What this episode covers

Before anyone can truly help your mom, someone has to actually understand her. That’s what an assessment is for.

A care assessment is a structured evaluation — usually done right in the home — of how your loved one is really doing: mobility, bathing, dressing, medications, memory, nutrition, fall risks around the house, and what the family can and cannot sustain. Out of it comes a written care plan: exactly what help is needed, when, and by whom. In Maryland, licensed agencies are required to assess before care begins, with nurse involvement in building the plan. And reputable agencies offer that initial consultation at no cost and no obligation — it’s information, not a commitment.

Families usually guess at what a parent needs — and usually underestimate. An assessment replaces guessing with a plan, and it’s the natural first step even if you’re not ready to start care yet.
