What this episode covers
A nurse who comes to the house — isn’t that the same as home care? Not quite. And the difference decides who pays.
Home health is skilled medical care delivered at home under a doctor’s orders — nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists. It’s typically short-term: recovering after a hospital stay, managing wounds, adjusting to new medications, regaining strength. Because it’s medical and doctor-ordered, Medicare usually covers it when you qualify — generally when the patient is homebound and needs skilled care. But here’s what surprises families: home health visits are brief. A nurse may come two or three times a week, for less than an hour each time. Who handles the other one hundred sixty-five hours — the bathing, the meals, the supervision? That’s home care, and it’s a separate service.
Most families actually need both after a hospital stay. Knowing the difference keeps you from assuming Medicare has it covered — when it doesn’t.
