What this episode covers

Hospice is not giving up. It may be the most misunderstood word in all of senior care.

Hospice is comfort-focused care for someone whose illness is expected to run its course within about six months. The focus shifts from curing the disease to quality of life — managing pain, easing symptoms, and supporting the whole family emotionally and spiritually. A full team — nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains — comes to wherever your loved one lives: their home, an assisted living residence, or a facility. Medicare covers hospice at essentially no cost to the family, including medications and equipment related to the diagnosis. And it isn’t a one-way door — families can revoke hospice at any time if circumstances change.

Families who wait say the same thing afterward: we wish we had called sooner. Earlier hospice almost always means more comfort, more support, and more meaningful time together.
