What this episode covers
You can’t pour from an empty cup — and caregiving empties the cup faster than almost anything in life.
Respite care is short-term care that gives the family caregiver a real break — a few hours a week, a weekend away, or a short stay in an assisted living home while you travel, work, or recover from your own illness. A professional caregiver steps in so your loved one stays safe and cared for while you step back and breathe. Respite can happen in your loved one’s home or in a residential setting. And help paying for it exists: certain veterans programs, Medicaid programs, and local aging agencies offer respite support — and hospice includes respite as a built-in benefit.
Caregiver burnout is not a character flaw — it’s what happens when one person carries everything. Scheduled respite isn’t a luxury. It’s what makes long-term caregiving survivable.
