What this episode covers
It was ‘just a fall.’ Six months later, nothing about her life looks the same.
For seniors, a fall is rarely just a fall — it’s often the first domino. About one in four older adults falls each year, and a serious fall frequently triggers the spiral: hospitalization, days in bed that drain strength, rehab, and then a fear of falling that makes people move less — which weakens them further and makes the next fall more likely. Hip fractures are the extreme case: many seniors never fully regain their prior independence. Here’s the overlooked part — most falls are preventable. Strength and balance exercise, medication reviews (dizziness is a side effect of many common drugs), vision checks, and simple home modifications dramatically cut the risk. And after any fall, even without injury, ask why it happened: blood pressure? A new medication? That bathroom rug?
Treat the first fall as the warning shot, not bad luck. It’s usually the moment to bring in a professional assessment — before the second fall makes the decisions for you.
