What this episode covers

Imagine assisted living — but in a real home, on a real street, with a handful of residents instead of a hundred.

Residential assisted living is the small-home model: a licensed home in a residential neighborhood caring for a small number of residents rather than a large building full of them. The difference is scale. Higher caregiver-to-resident ratios. Meals cooked in a family kitchen. Staff who know every resident’s name, story, and preferences. For seniors with memory concerns — or anyone who’d feel lost in long corridors and crowded dining halls — the home setting is calmer, quieter, and far more personal. And Maryland licenses and inspects these homes under the same assisted living standards as the big communities, including staff training and safety requirements.

Many families never learn this option exists — they think it’s a big facility or nothing. If your loved one would wilt in a large community, a small home may be exactly the answer.
