What this episode covers
Dad keeps wandering at night. Locking the doors is not a care plan.
Memory care is specialized care for people living with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. It combines two things: a secured environment that prevents unsafe wandering, and staff trained specifically in dementia — how to redirect instead of argue, how to calm agitation, how to communicate when words start to fail. Days are built around routine, familiar cues, and activities matched to each person’s remaining abilities, because structure itself is therapeutic. Memory care is offered inside many assisted living communities and residential assisted living homes — and in Maryland, providers caring for residents with dementia must meet additional, dementia-specific training requirements.
Dementia caregiving at home eventually outgrows what one family can safely do — usually at two in the morning. Learn what memory care offers before that call comes, and you’ll choose calmly instead of scrambling.
