What this episode covers

It sounds so simple: ‘Mom will just move in with us.’ The families who thrive planned for everything that sentence hides.

Multigenerational caregiving can be beautiful — and it’s a major decision that deserves a plan. Think through: space and safety — is there a bedroom and bathroom she can actually use, or do renovations come first? Money — who pays for what, documented in writing, which also matters for Medicaid later. Your household — is your spouse genuinely on board, and what changes for your kids and your job? The trajectory — today’s needs are one thing, but can your home handle a wheelchair, overnight wandering, or hands-on care a year from now? Boundaries — privacy for everyone, house rules, and an honest answer to ‘what happens if this isn’t working?’ And build in respite from day one — scheduled home care hours so the arrangement doesn’t quietly consume the caregiver.

Move-ins fail from unspoken assumptions, not lack of love. One honest family meeting with everything on the table is the best furniture you’ll ever buy for that new bedroom.
