What this episode covers
One sibling says home care. One says assisted living. One says Mom is fine. Sound familiar?
Sibling conflict over a parent’s care is nearly universal — fueled by different information (the local child sees the decline daily; the distant one hears a cheerful phone voice), old family roles, money, and guilt and fear wearing different masks. What works: get everyone the same facts first — a professional care assessment gives the family one objective picture to discuss, instead of dueling impressions. Hold a real family meeting with an agenda: the parent’s wishes first, then needs, options, costs, and who does what — because ‘helping’ isn’t a plan; assigned roles are. Put the decisions in writing. Keep the parent’s voice at the center while they can still speak for themselves. And when it’s truly deadlocked, bring in a neutral: a care manager, a mediator, or the parent’s own doctor.
The goal was never winning the argument — it’s making sure your parent doesn’t pay the price of the stalemate. Facts, roles, and writing beat volume every time.
