What this episode covers

The hardest conversation in aging isn’t about money or facilities. It’s about the car keys.

Driving is independence, identity, and freedom — which is exactly why this conversation goes badly when it’s framed as taking something away. Watch for the signs: new dents and scrapes, close calls, getting lost on familiar routes, confusing the pedals, riding the brake, friends quietly declining rides. What works: start early and go gradually — ‘let’s skip night driving’ comes long before ‘no driving.’ Use the doctor: physicians can order occupational therapy driving evaluations that deliver an objective answer nobody in the family has to argue for. Maryland also accepts confidential medical referrals to the MVA when safety demands it. Most important of all: solve transportation before removing it — rides to church, groceries delivered, a caregiver who drives. The car was never the point. Access to life is.

Replace the freedom before you take the keys, and the entire conversation transforms. A caregiver who drives isn’t a babysitter — she’s the new set of wheels.
