What this episode covers

You made the call. Care starts Monday. Here’s what the first week should look like — so you know what good looks like.

With a licensed agency, care begins before the caregiver ever arrives: a professional assessment and a written care plan covering tasks, schedule, and your parent’s preferences. On day one, expect introductions and rhythm-finding — a good caregiver spends it learning the routines, the home, and exactly how your mother takes her coffee, not rearranging her life. In the early days, some resistance or awkwardness from your parent is completely normal — it almost always softens as the caregiver becomes a familiar face. What you should see: caregivers arriving on time, care-plan tasks actually happening, notes or updates after visits, and a supervisor checking in. Speak up early about anything — schedule tweaks, personality fit, added tasks. A quality agency wants that call. And if the match isn’t right, ask for a change without an ounce of guilt.

The first week sets the tone for everything that follows. When you know what good looks like, you never have to settle for less.
