What this episode covers
After the hospital comes rehab — but where? The facility with the therapy gym, or her own living room?
Facility rehab in a skilled nursing setting offers daily therapy, nursing around the clock, and zero home hazards while healing — the right call after major surgery, with significant weakness, or when there’s no support at home. Home-based rehab brings physical and occupational therapists to the house through home health — the right call when the patient is safe enough at home, motivated, and supported between visits. The home advantage is real: therapists train your mother on her actual stairs, in her actual bathroom. The honest variables: safety during all the hours therapy isn’t happening — home health visits are brief — caregiver availability, and what Medicare covers on each path. Many families blend the two: a short facility stay, then home therapy — with home care filling the hours in between.
‘Where should rehab happen’ is really ‘who is there the other twenty-three hours.’ Answer that question first, and the right setting usually becomes obvious.
